Papworth Tennis Club Championships
On Sunday 13th September Papworth Tennis Club hosted the finals of its annual Club Championships. It was another fantastic day with some incredible matches watched by a decent crowd of spectators. The level of talent we are lucky to have at the club was clear for all to see. Players and spectators were spoiled again to another fabulous buffet lunch from Clare Lindsay, and the day ran smoothly thanks to the organisation of referee John Garland.
Matches took place in more than 15 categories in various age groups with the players doing well to compete through intermittent drizzle and periods of warm sunshine.
The senior singles categories were particularly noteworthy with two teenagers emerging as the winners. Oliver Strowgger claimed his first men’s singles title overcoming Steve Plumridge, while Caitlin Jouvray retained her ladies’ singles title beating Chloe Mutema in the final. Kamil Kaminski and Tom Hunter also retained their men’s doubles title against Ryan Woolf and Steve Plumridge, and Theresa Truter and Diane Cobb won the ladies’ doubles for the third year running. A full list of winners from this year’s championships can be found on the club’s Instagram and Facebook pages.
Thank you to everybody who came down to support the players.
At the end of the day Club Chairman Andy Ellis presented John Garland with a gift as he steps down from his role as Head Coach to take up a new position at Peterborough. John has played a key role in the huge success of the club in the last few years, developing players and driving the club forward to help with team success at all levels. He will be missed by everyone and we wish him well in his next role.
