Celebrating 10 Years

As we start a new term, we are very proud to be celebrating 10 years of scouting in Papworth since we re-established the group back in 2016.

This was not the first set of Scouts in Papworth; the scouting archive shows that the 6th  Cambridge District (Papworth St Everard) existed before its registration as the 50th  Cambridge as both a Cub pack and a Scout troop.   They started in February 1924 and were meeting at the school with its Scout Master Thomas Charles Marston Johnson from Papworth Hall.

This lapsed briefly in 1929, but reappeared in 1930 and registered at the Scout Hut, Papworth Everard (possibly nearby the current village hall car park). The hut was opened by Her Royal Highness Princess Mary in 1927.There were 17 Wolf Cubs, and 10 Scouts. Unfortunately, after WWII, the groups within the county seem to have been re-absorbed into other districts and Papworth seems to have disappeared.

Since we restarted 10 years ago, we have been lucky enough to be able work with hundreds of children teaching them skills for life, through numerous camps, badge work and community relationships. We have collected tons of food for the food bank, helped Santa visit many children and flipped thousands of burgers.

We have camped in Wales, The Lake district, Dorset and many other locations across the UK. We have tried new activities such as caving, coasteering, white water rafting to mention a few. We have climbed rock faces and climbing walls, shot rifles and bows and taken to the water in anything from a canoe, paddle board or sailing boat to a coracle made of pipe and plastic

You might have seen us around the village, collecting litter, following a map or playing games on the sports field. You will have heard us in the woods, playing wide games, making dens and lighting fires.

In the 10 years we have been running we are lucky enough to have had the support of many generous volunteers, being it supporting meetings, or in the background helping run the group. But a number of our volunteers have been with us from the start or for over 5 years. They have watched their children move through the sections, even becoming leaders themselves at the end.

But as we look forward to the next 10 years, we are looking for more volunteers to step forward to help support the group. If you were a scout or guide when you were young and would like to give something back or you are just interested in getting involved in some capacity, please get in touch. We are looking for both weekly helpers and committee members to support the existing team keep the fun continuing.

Beavers – Ages 6 to 8 meet Mondays from 6.15 to 7.30

Cubs – Ages 8 to 10½ meet Wednesdays from 7.00 to 8.30

Scouts – Ages 10½ to14 meet Tuesdays from 7.00 to 8.30
