Unfortunately the paddling pool will not open for the summer holidays this year and while disappointment is understandable, much of the social media commentary has been ill-informed and unacceptable. Strong opinions expressed without knowledge of the facts serve no constructive purpose — and this situation demands better.

The facts are clear: the previous Parish Council failed to act appropriately earlier in the year. Their belated consultation was inadequate and achieved nothing of substance.

What must be understood is this: May’s election brought an almost entirely new Parish Council. They inherited multiple unresolved issues from their predecessors, whose poor judgment and heavy-handed approach have resulted in lost opportunities and delayed projects across the village.

The new council has already successfully resolved several urgent matters, including the MUGA, concerning allocations of funds and local sports club issues. The paddling pool, regrettably, proved beyond immediate remedy despite their intensive efforts.

Context matters: this paddling pool has operated since the early 1950s. It is one of the last of its kind — a unique community asset that has survived decades while others closed. In an era of commercial water parks, this facility has endured thanks to those committed to its preservation.

The pool is open to everyone, not just Papworth Everard residents. Many users travel from surrounding areas. Yet it operates entirely free of charge, funded solely by Papworth Everard parishioners through the precept — no grants, no external funding.

One year’s closure due to the previous council’s failures is regrettable. But sly comments and uninformed criticism helps no one and is not helpful to those who are trying to put things right.
